What's with all the kissing when the Torah is carried around during services????

As the Torah makes its way through the congregation, people will touch
the Torah's cover with their prayerbook, Talit, or their fingers and
then kiss them as a sign of respect.

The origin of this custom comes from the Song of Songs (3:11), where
the Jewish people are the bride and God, portrayed by the Torah, is the
bridegroom.

"Come out, O maidens of Zion, and gaze upon King Solomon!

He is wearing the crown with which his mother crowned him on his wedding day, on the most joyous day of his life!"

In the time of the Great Temple, a bridegroom was crowned with flowers.  This tradition was the basis for "crowning" our Torahs with silver.

As the Torah, the bridegroom, makes its way through the aisles it is lavished with kisses by its adoring bride, the congregation of Israel .

A lovely thought and the reason behind all the singing and rejoicing as the Torah makes its way around the sanctuary.
